At the beginning of the year, United Airlines announced a promotion that allowed younger travelers to score exclusive discounts on air travel. United’s “Young Traveler” discount offered travelers ages 18 to 22 discounts on flights operated by the airline. The promotion was initially slated to end on June 30th, 2020. However, United has extended this promotion through the end of the year.

It is unclear whether or not United’s decision to extend its young traveler discount is related to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. Airlines and hotels across the globe are working on getting passengers back in the air and guests back in hotels. One way airlines and hotels are doing this is by offering various discounts and promotions. That being said, United’s decision to extend this promotion is not all that surprising.

Here are the details of United Airlines’ Young Traveler discount.

Travelers ages 18 to 22 are eligible to access discounted fares. Additionally, all eligible travelers must have an active United MileagePlus account and the United Airlines mobile app. All young traveler fares must be booked using the United Airlines app. Eligible travelers must first log in to their MileagePlus account within the app to access young traveler fares.

Upon downloading the app and signing in to an active MileagePlus account, eligible travelers should then navigate to the booking window using the menu at the bottom of their screen. Selecting the “Book” icon will then bring up a screen that displays available fare options. This is the point at which travelers will be able to confirm whether or not they are still eligible for the young traveler discount. Eligible travelers should select the “Discounted travel (ages 18-22),” tab at which point the booking window will open.

From the booking screen, search for your desired itinerary. Flights and itineraries eligible for United’s young traveler discount will be displayed on the following screen. You will want to confirm that your desired itinerary is eligible for the young traveler discount as standard fares may be included alongside discounted fares. All discounted fares feature “Discounted” in green text below the fare.

When United initially ran this promotion, The College Points analyzed various other popular routes, including flights from the US to Europe. Savings were greater for these flights. Unfortunately, borders in most European countries remain closed to US passport holders. Still, United’s young traveler discount will allow college students and other young adult travelers to save a few bucks through the end of the year.
